RPG With Great Art
#RPGaDay2024
I can’t say I care for great art in an RPG book. I want to get into something I can pick up and either play, or run, or journal solo.
Mainly solo journaling these days, since physically getting together to game in groups in groups is becoming a thing of the past, between the covid pandemic starting it off and the rise of Roll20, VTT, and Fantasy Grounds to finish the job.
Art’s not that important. Though some game book art does stick in the mind. Here are some examples.
Art only conveys an impression. It’s up to you, the players and referee, to bring the settings to life through sensory descriptions, invoking the senses of hearing and scent to augment the visual impression: the feel of the wind against bare skin, of gravel or sand underneath your feet, and the scents of jungle, or ocean, or city flooding your sinuses.
It takes a lot of work, and some extra words, from your Guide to take an image and turn it into your characters’ surroundings. And if you have good enough words, you won’t need the art to put them there.
Though some art does help.
